The Hotel Pelourinho's name pays homage to the neighborhood where it's located. It was originally a home to students, one of whom was Brazil's perhaps best-known author Jorge Amado, whose novels have been translated into various languages, and who actually wrote the novel Suor right here. The Hotel Pelourinho is one of the only hotels in Salvador whose history is directly related to the rich literary heritage of Brazil.
The Hotel Pelourinho has also been the setting of films and soap operas and was the theme of the painting exhibition Portais da Bahia mounted by the American artist Barbara Cervenka.
Because it is located in the Historic Center and is protected by and preserved as a UNESCO-declared World Heritage site for its history and architecture, the Hotel Pelourinho is frequented by a lively mix of researchers, teachers and students of history, the arts, architecture, cinema, theater, languages, journalism and sociology, in addition to painters and other artists who find inspiration here.
